Position Summary

A chance to join a flourishing team in base metals research and analysis. The GFMS team at Thomson Reuters has an unparalleled history with almost 50 years of experience in researching the gold market, more recently expanding into silver and the platinum group metals and, significantly, the base metals complex. The core of the team is based in London, England but we have analysts across the globe, producing supply and demand numbers for the copper market in considerable detail, while we are growing our coverage of other base metals and into iron ore.

Surrounding this is continuous analysis of the markets and assessment of the impact of developments around the world on metals prices and market structures. With the wide resources available in Thomson Reuters group we are building a product deliverable via desktop into clients’ offices, providing not just the fundamental research, but “live” market commentary and analysis, giving individual analysts exposure to a world-wide readership, as well as direct interaction with clients. We are also working closely with other research elements in the organisation, looking to develop, for example, a study of certain commodity flows around the world and tying in with shipping patterns and the use of interactive maps.

We are looking to recruit an Analyst to be based in Singapore, to help to cover the research into the demand side of these metals markets.

Position Overview

The analyst will report to the Manager of Base Metals demand. The role will focus primarily on market outlooks for both the short and long term and on the demand-side aspects across base metals as well as lithium and cobalt.

Role Responsibilities

This analyst will be involved in the fundamental analysis and commentary (as relevant) that enhance existing or new products and services with respect to the base metals, plus lithium and cobalt. The work will include maintenance of some of the existing data suites, while contributing written, graphical and numerical work to the range of GFMS’ metals research products and developing fresh initiatives and products.

This is a pro-active team and the ideal candidate will have a flair for innovation and be prepared in time to work with various departments in the Supply Chain Commodities Research Division and potentially the Advisory and Investment Management team in order to grow new ideas and expand the scope of existing products. /


Education * At least to a Bachelor’s degree level, preferably in economics or a forensic subject such as the Sciences, Engineering or Law

Skills and Experience Required * Strong numerical, written and verbal skills in order to be able to assemble and analyse the data captured and to articulate the findings through written research reports and presentations * Consultative approach with clients prospects and market stakeholders * Confident, resourceful self-starter, plus a mind geared to rigorous attention to detail and a good team spirit * Fully conversant with Excel, Word, Power Point; the Adobe suite of products would also be highly advantageous * Solid work in the field of commodity research, especially the metals sector, or in an associated consuming industrial sector * Knowledge of languages other Asian language preferably mandarin due to the region this role will support * Statistical techniques would be an advantage * A logical approach to data manipulation and putting information into context would be highly advantageous
