APL Specialist/Senior Analyst, Liner Planning & Strategy in Singapore, Singapore

This role has a global purview across geography, trade-markets, economy, macro-environment and other relevant global issues to assist the Planning & Strategy department in charting the overall strategic direction of APL, through developing, executing and monitoring of strategy initiatives. The role also requires identification of opportunities and challenges within the organization and the industry as a whole through competitor analysis, benchmarking and market trend analysis.
Key Result Areas
Assist the department in ensuring APL’s competitive advantage by supporting the development, execution and monitoring of strategic initiatives for the company.
Analyze databases of market data/ information such as industry trends or competitor activities in the market place and use various industry sources of data on demand and supply indicators, to support APL business plans.
Assist in tracking and maintaining database on key competitors’ performance and benchmarking metrics
To assist in the delivery of market and benchmarking analysis in a timely and accurate manner
Support Liner 5 Year Planning process; consolidate insights from demand & supply available from various sources to evaluate growth opportunities and strategic options available. Build & compare scenarios resulting from variations in key business parameters
Analyze market growth potential, APL’s profitability and market shares; compare APL relative Trade-Country performance, develop strategic options to strengthen APL’s competitive advantage and optimize overall financial performance. This includes activities like Market analysis in terms of demand/supply, Market Entry/Expansion/Options
Monitor industry trends, use various sources of data and analyze medium to long-term impacts of trends observed including Trade Demand, Market Growth, Freight Rates, Customer Activity, Competitors, Supply, Newbuilds and Route/Ship deployment
Appraise available data on projected market growth, commodity growth trends, country manufacturing, sourcing and distribution to develop potential opportunities strategic options available. Collaborate to perform financial analysis; modelling and any other effective financial tool, to support longer range deployments and market penetration recommendations for the medium to long term.
Build a consolidated view of APL’s Long-Term Tonnage requirements from a market perspective. Assess ship and capacity requirements relative to market growth to determine market share impact. Measure Tonnage Gap and asset investment required to meet Liner goals. Collaborate to assess resource requirements in terms of ships, equipment and infrastructure including long-term capital investment if required
Carry out a variety of long-term trade analysis to support APL mission, vision and goals. Includes assessment to grow, reduce, withdraw from or divest existing Trades or Countries. Evaluate options to expand to new trades or grow into profitable fringe markets that we are not participating today, and identification of potential new trades, cross-trades synergy and cross-trades opportunities
Work with different data sources available within the Company such as JOC, PIERS Forecasts, Global Insights, Drewry/Clarkson/MDS Transmodal to support all above mentioned work
Conduct second level analyses; Analyse a range of decision-situations and provide strategic recommendations. Run value-quantification and simulation projects on various aspects of business. As required assist in what-if, sensitivity and scenario analysis for APL Liner. This includes financial analysis eg: freight rate changes and non-financial analysis e.g: customer or competitive actions. Assist to develop and formalise strategic planning process and work flow, to build alignment of goals and mission in aspects of Strategic Liner Planning
Work closely with APL Management, Trades and Regions on APL medium to long-term requirements including all the above
Track and update management on CMA-APL country level office integration
Assist in preparation of weekly submissions to Marseille Head Office for internal benchmarking reports: a. Freight rate benchmarking report and b. Trade utilization report
Conduct general business reviews including corporate performance, cost-cutting initiatives and organization functions
Support APL senior management in industry engagements and customer presentations through research, analysis and modelling
Bachelor's degree in Business or Economics
At least 1-3 years industry experience
Excellent MS Office skills, especially in Excel and Powerpoint, good understanding of financial and investment analysis, evaluation and forecasting techniques. Understanding of basic principles of modelling; experience in building multi-piece spreadsheet-models
Independent thinker, resourceful and self-starter
Strong organization skills, communication, team player, self-motivated, independent and reliable. Results driven, some experience with research work will be advantageous, good business knowledge
