Job Description


The role of the Market Analyst (Gasoline) is to provide first class proprietary research for the Global Gasoline Team to enhance the team's ability to generate profit in both paper and physical trading space.

The core of the role is to deliver fact-based insights into the current near term and future behaviors & developments of the global refining, crude oil and finished products markets.

The Market Analyst (Gasoline) is expected to gain in depth knowledge of the global gasoline market and provide detailed market views to be discussed with the trading team as well as with other teams across Shell.

The analyst will have both regional and global reach.


In particular, Market Analyst (Gasoline) will:

  • Enhance and maintain regional proprietary supply demand model for the gasoline market

  • Work with other gasoline analysts (in the global team) to generate a globally consistent perspective of market dynamics from a short term (weekly, monthly, quarterly view) to the longer term

  • Monitor long and short term demand changes and fuels substitution, such as CNG/Diesel/LPG/Electric

  • Monitor short and long term refinery additions and closure and its impact on the gasoline market

  • Monitor key specification changes affecting gasoline market

  • Provide market data for the global trading business and the wider Trading organization.

  • Collaborate with staff in the Oil Markets team from downstream strategy to ensure Gasoline trading view is well aligned.

  • Use external research such as PIRA, FGE, Energy Aspects to gain further insights

  • Attend external conferences, network with other analysts and providers of useful information within the oil industry

  • Provide key country analysis. For example, i) impact of changes in tax / quotas in China market. ii) impact of ethanol blending into India and China with changes in ethanol/gasoline spread iii) Indonesia import expectation based on demand expectation and refinery run rates. etc.


Experience and Qualifications

  • Both Economics and Engineering graduate with strong analytical skill could be well suited.

  • Well versed in Microsoft Query, Microsoft Power BI

  • Candidate with computer programming skill (VBA, Java) and is proficient in Data Analytics software application (Spotfire or Tableau) will be highly regarded.

  • Numerate, motivated, self-starter with good communication stills

  • Previous experience gained over some years encompassing Oil markets Analysis, Refining, or Trading would be an advantage.

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Willingness to challenge conventional thinking

  • Communicate effectively with different stakeholders at various organizational levels,

  • Demonstrated ability to work on complex global problems,

  • Build shared vision and energize others into collective action to achieve a goal and tenacity to drive new thinking.
